Nyoko-do

This is former residence of Dr.Takashi Nagai, the famous radiologist from Nagasaki. After his exposure of the atomic bomb explosion,he made great efforts for the welfare of the atomic bomb survivors until his death at the age of 43(on May 1) in 1951.
Dr.Nagai lost his wife in the bombing, and lived to his death with his two small children in this tiny house.Lying here confined to bed,he wrote several books about the atomic bombing including "Bell of Nagasaki" and "Leaving these Children Behind".
A fervent Catholic,Dr.Nagai named this house "Nyoko-do","As Yourself Hall" after the famous words of Jesus Christ "Love your neighbor as you love yourself".

After graduating from Nagasaki Medical College and specializing in radiology,he became an assistant professor and worked as head of the Physical Therapy Department where he developed chronic myelgic leukemia due to his long hours of work.
Dr.Nagai was exposed to the atomic explosion but made great efforts in attending to the wounded. His condition grew worse because of this, and he was forced to lie in bed terminally ill.
Spurred on,however,by his unbending spirit for scientific research and his burning faith as a Catholic,he produced more than 10 books from his sick bed, including "Outline of Atomic Diseases",before passing away on May 1,1951 at the age of 43.
This is the house where Dr.Nagai wrote those many books, end where he lived until the end with his two small childred after losing his wife to the atomic bomb.
